What can you do with a Google Map of Guatemala?

How does Google Maps rank as an online map site for Guatemala?

Google Maps is arguably the best-known online map service.  However, all map services are not created equal. Some have better features overall, and others are better for certain locations. In this section, I'll review the features that can be found in a Google Map of Guatemala. (Disclaimer: This is an independent review.  I am in no way affiliated with Google.)

Map of Guatemala - Whole Country Level (approx. 50 miles = 1 inch)

In Map View, Google Maps shows most of the major highways as yellow roads, though these highways are not labeled at this level.  Also, 10-15 major cities are labeled and parts of neighboring countries are visible, giving a good regional perspective.

At this view, departmental boundaries (similar to states or provinces) are marked by dotted lines, though the lines are obscured a bit by the highway lines and city names (hardly a reason to complain!)  To my knowledge, there is no way to remove roads in map view.  If you know how to do this, contact me.

Other features

If you click on "More" at the top right of the map, several options appear.  Photos, Videos, Wikipedia, and Webcams are the default.  These can be customized by going into your "My Maps" section - many other options are available that might prove useful to you.

Photos - The first option under "More" is Photos.  I clicked on that and there are many (as in more than 100) great photos from all over Guatemala, from travel photos to professional-quality photos of Mayan ruins.  Unfortunately, I could only get one of them to enlarge - see note below for specifics.

Video - Several videos were up about Guatemala - add more yourself and there will be more!

Wikipedia - Geotagged Wikipedia articles for places all over guatemala show when you select this option.  There are between 25-50 articles that show as of this writing.

Webcam - This option yielded no webcam results for Guatemala, though one did show for Mexico.  If you know of any, add them or send the link to me and I'll add it for you. 

**Note** - These last four options (Photos, Video, Wikipedia, and Webcam) were not working for me at the time of writing - I only got one photo to open, even trying various places in the US, thinking it might be a location problem.  I tried several different computers (PC), browsers (IE7, Firefox, Chrome) and on XP and Vista.  I will check back and update as needed - this is something important to take into account if this feature continues to be problematic.  These options are powered through Panoramio and even on their site (panoramio.com/map) I couldn't get it to work, so it's probably an issue on their side.  Contact me if this works if this works for you, preferably with information about your browser and operating system so other readers can benefit.

**Update** - Soon after writing this page, I was again able to get these features to work.  I'm leaving this note in case anyone else has issues.
